My 11th grade American History teacher, Mr. Flowers asked me who or what my inspiration to go to college was. I instantly emerged into a feeling of disgust. I never was pushed to go to college, & what a perfect time to start thinking! Time was running out and I needed an answer to Mr. Flower’s question. Will I go to college? Am I college material? I have one year and no one has ever really inspired me to be college bound. This started my late sojourn to a successful education.
Since elementary school, all of my student peers viewed me as a definite prospect. From music & creative art to literature writing skills, I shined all throughout life, artistically. Many people of elder age considered me a prodigy. I never believed this. I affirmed the thought of being not good, but okay.
I quickly began to think about my ancestors. Being of African descent, life in America was a struggle. Especially for education. They fought and fought just for us to have a decent knowledge of what I take for granite everyday. Tears came from my eyes, weeping thoughts of every life that was lost for me. This struggle became my inspiration.
I then began taking school more serious than ever. I made myself college bound. Using my talents for a career, but yet accepting that I have much to learn. I then saw the face of Martin Luther King Jr, Fredrick Douglas & Marcus Garvey. They set permanent marks in history with a high education back in a time where it wasn't easy.
Now days I have a better opportunity. My family is not the wealthiest, nor the poorest. My school is not the best, nor the worst. I have been blessed with a chance. A chance to become successful. These are the words Mr. Flowers admired me for. The birth of inspiration met my death of worries & fears of college.
